Our ‘We Foster To’ Child Event
At Blue Sky Fostering, we recognise the significant contribution birth children play in successful placements – to encompass all children at Blue Sky, we use the term ‘children who foster’. To support children who foster in coming together to discuss the positive and negative impacts of sharing their homes and families Blue Sky hold regular events to provide opportunities for them to discuss these with agency staff, and other birth children, in a fun and safe environment.
Early in October, we teamed up with Resurface, a Bournemouth based surfing, yoga and cold-water therapy group. The aim of the session was to provide silent yoga on the beach followed by an introductory to surf lesson, finishing with s’mores round an open fire at the local surf shack. Unfortunately, due to heavy weather conditions, we were unable to take the surfboards out. Despite this, the children and young people enjoyed silent yoga in the surf shack, after which we headed to the beach in our wetsuits and they learned some basic surfing skills on the sand, including pop-ups and paddling. To finish the beach session, they enjoyed a mass sea dip. After a cold and blustery session on the beach, we headed back to the surf shack where they warmed up in the hot tub and filled themselves on s’mores and cakes provided by Becca’s Bakes. Although the event didn’t go as planned, it was enjoyed by all and gave us an opportunity to check in with them.
“I loved it! I was a bit nervous at first, but everyone was so nice it made me feel comfortable. I liked jumping in the waves with my friends. I thought the yoga with headphones was cool as I had never done that before."
