Foster Care in Somerset

With undulating, expansive scenery which stretches from the surrounding hills to the long stretch of coastline of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset is home to a traditional British way of life, blending tourist experiences and activities with a friendly, community spirit. As well as being popular with both locals and visitors, Somerset, which has a total of 268 state schools and 32 independent or private schools across the county, has a high ranking in terms of Ofsted, which has 83.5% of all Somerset schools rated as good or outstanding.

For families with children, this means that Somerset is not only a vibrant and lively place to raise your children – it is also somewhere where learning is highly valued and where development in all areas of life can be nurtured. For those without children, whose children have flown the nest, or simply have room in their home and heart for more young people, fostering could well be the journey you’ve been looking for.

Boasting endless rewards for both the children in care and the foster carers who take them in, fostering is an opportunity to share your surroundings with children who may not be familiar with the concept of love, support, or proper guidance. Whether you take in a child or teenager for a short term placement or a long term arrangement, when you invite a child into your home you give them permission to feel safe – something which many children in the foster system haven’t experienced for a long time.

There are approximately 57,380 children living with foster families (figures from March 2021), with England alone seeking an urgent need for at least 7,000 more placement homes for children from all backgrounds and walks of life. Here at Blue Sky Fostering we aim to streamline the process so that you have the support you need to welcome a young child or teenager into your home – offering a variety of fostering services from fostering siblings to therapeutically-led care and more.

This is Maggie and Maisie’s story.

Maisie was a 16-year old mother when she and her newly born daughter moved in with foster carer Maggie. Though the placement only lasted for a few months, from March to September, the bond that the two formed became unbreakable – with Maggie teaching Maisie how to become a good mother to her daughter while also providing the 16-year old with the parenting she herself needed.

Encouraging Maisie to open up and become more confident, it is through Maggie’s support that Maisie has been able to enrol in a college course and can now live independently – raising her daughter in a way which she hopes will make Maggie proud.
