"I'd love to foster, but I have dogs and you wouldn't want me" was the way the conversation began at a recent recruitment event. It was that short sentence that convinced us we need to get out in to the community, chat with people in a relaxed and casual setting and stop this myth!
With the need for foster carers growing at an alarming rate, we recognised the fact that actually meeting people, face to face, gave them the chance to ask anything they wanted to know about fostering and gave us the opportunity to reassure them that carers come from all backgrounds, with all sorts of home situations, from all areas and there will always be a child or young person who really needs their help.
And the truth of the matter is that over 90% of foster carers have pets, mostly dogs and cats, with the occasional tarantula, snake or chinchilla and even carers with farmyards full of cows and pigs!
If you see us in your local Co-Op, please stop, say 'hi' and ask us lots of questions! We will be pleased to take your contact details for one of our colleagues to visit you in your home and help you take your first steps to fostering!
